Laughter yoga is a unique concept, based on scientific research, which has shown that the body cannot tell the difference between real and simulated laughter. In both situations, laughter offers the same benefits to the body: it helps bring more oxygen to the brain, leaving the participant feeling more energized and relaxed.
Laughing and hearing laughter have a real effect on your brain; an accessible wellness effect that doesn’t require medication or costly expenses. Laughter is an accessible tool that I offer in small groups, but it becomes an accessible tool when you’re on your own.
According to the principles of the therapeutic technique called Neuro-Linguistic Programming, whatever makes you laugh, you’ll feel the benefits: improved emotional health, strengthened relationships and increased well-being. Laughter has been shown to decrease the presence of the stress hormone (cortisol) in the body and increase the happiness hormone (endorphin), which is why it combines well with a program for recovery from depression and burn-out.
The reason it’s called laughter yoga is that, during a session, I guide with several breathing exercises and propose fun exercises that initiate laughter and eye contact with others, which surely leads to heartfelt, contagious laughter.
Without the need to talk, or revisit unpleasant events, laughter yoga offers a real therapeutic possibility. It can be the starting point of a wellness approach, complement another therapy of your choice, or simply be part of your self-care tools. Laughter brings lightness to everyday life, as well as to the most difficult times, and that’s why I love to introduce laughter yoga to my clients as a tool for happiness.
This technique has been traveling the world since 1995: there are now 6000 laughter yoga groups in 72 different countries.
